New York Police Department Tee Shirts.About the NYPDThe word "cop" was first used in 1845 and applied to the police because of the star shaped copper shields they wore. Today the New York Police Department numbers more than 38,000 uniformed officers and several thousand civilian employees. It is the largest Police Department in the United States and one of the largest in the world. Since January, 1994 the NYPD has been waging a full-scale strategic attack on crime in New York City. Instead of merely reacting to individual crimes as they occur, the Department has established strategies for anticipating and confronting the problems of guns, youth crimes, drugs, domestic violence, disorder in public areas, auto-related theft and police corruption. These strategies have achieved the largest drop in felony crime in the city's modern history.
